Penha de França sits just far enough from the tourist corridor to feel like the real Lisbon. Here's what to do, eat, and see when you stay with us.
Most visitors to Lisbon stay in Alfama, Chiado, or Bairro Alto — and those are fine choices. But Penha de França, the neighbourhood where Angels Homes sits, has something those areas have almost entirely lost: the feeling of a place where real people live.
The streets here are quiet in the mornings. The café on the corner has been run by the same family for thirty years. The miradouro — Miradouro da Penha de França — is five minutes on foot and on a clear day you can see the Tagus and across to the south bank. Almost nobody is there except locals walking their dogs.
The second viewpoint, Miradouro do Monte Agudo, is even less visited. It sits just a few minutes further uphill and the view is, if anything, better. You'll likely have it to yourself.
Food is the other reason to stay here. Rui has his own short list — three tascas within a ten-minute walk where the food is honest, the price is fair, and the owners will remember your face by your second visit. Ask him when you arrive. He'll tell you where to go based on what you're in the mood for.
The metro connection is good — Areeiro and Alameda are both within ten minutes on foot, which means Baixa, Parque das Nações, and the airport are all easy to reach. But the best reason to stay in Penha de França is simpler: you'll spend less time feeling like a tourist and more time feeling like you're actually in Lisbon.
